The Meals on Wheels is a Trust with charitable status and was set up some 30 years ago and its main objective to provide daily hot nutritious meals to the Infirmed, Elderly, Handicap, and any people in need in the New Ross area.
Presently we provide in excess of 20,000 meals a year, and that is an average of 400 meals a week to our clients and we provide meals six days a week.
Apart from the provision of meals, all staff and helpers play a vital pastoral role in the lives of those they serve. All too often the person delivering the meals is the only outside contact the elderly or house- bound client might have on that day.
The Centre also supplies meals to the day care workers who look after a number of the clients and call daily to collect meals for those clients and this ensures that these people get a very good nutritious diet daily and this can contribute to them continuing to live in their homes and stay independent much longer.
It is hoped, not only to continue the service, but to expand the numbers availing thereof. For that purpose we take every opportunity to promote and encourage elderly in our operating area to consider availing of this wonderful service ensuring they have access to nutritious meal every day and not having to cook such a meal especially those living alone.
The Centre employs a manager and three kitchen staff. We have 4 additional staff from the Social Employment Scheme.
The centre operates to the highest possible Hygiene Standards and have an active Health and Safety program in operation throughout the premises at all times.
A voluntary committee of six is lead and chaired by Mgr Joseph McGrath oversees the running of the project.
