On Tuesday September 30th Martin Doyle, President of Wexford Chamber, travelled to Cobh Co Cork to meet with Brian Curtis, President Cobh Harbour Chamber, Eric Downey, Vice President and Freda McDonald, CEO. The purpose of the visit was to discuss the impending arrival of a cruise ship in Rosslare Europort in August 2015 and to learn from the vast experience that Cobh has in handling visiting ships. Cobh Harbour welcomes over 70 cruise liners annually with passenger numbers varying from 800 to 3000.
Commenting on the visit Martin said “The purpose of the visit was to establish links with Cobh Chamber and tourism bodies and to seek their advice and guidance concerning the logistics of handling large liners and passenger numbers. The welcome, support and advice offered by Cobh Chamber was exceptional. They gave freely of their time and expertise and their enthusiasm and positivity towards Wexford was very much appreciated.”
The benefits of attracting liners to Rosslare will undoubtedly result in a positive spin-off for many of the tourist attractions throughout Wexford town and county. However, at this time there is only one visit scheduled for Rosslare and it will take time to increase the number and range of liners visiting the Europort.
In conclusion Martin said “It is imperative that all stakeholders now work together to prepare a comprehensive “product offering” that will attract this business. In so doing we can be confident that the best possible image of Wexford town and county will be portrayed to prospective visitors.”
