Stars of Welsh television and theatre fame will take to the stage at Whites of Wexford for a night of singing, music and comedy. Renowned entertainers, such as The Wedges and our Irish Dancers Celtic Roots will perform on Monday 25th May at 7.30pm.
The event is organised by local volunteer association, “Sport for Africa”, who have been fundraising to build schools in Africa since 2005. To date, the group has helped build primary and secondary schools, a technical college and a centre for children with special needs. They have also invested in developing existing educational facilities in an orphanage and have provided a new dormitory wing to a secondary school. These projects took place in many locations in Africa including Zambia, Kenya, South Africa and Malawi.
This year’s project is to construct a 600-pupil secondary school for boys and girls in Zambia. Because of the low cost of living, the cost to achieve this is just €20,000. This figure will build a 600-pupil school, provide lodgings for teaching staff and provide housing for animals as school fees are often paid for with animal donations. Once Sport for Africa reach their target, St. Patrick’s Missionary Society, Kiltegan take over the administration of the funds and the management of the project. All construction is carried out by local Zambian workers and all building materials are sourced locally; hence the economic impact of the school is immense during the build period and on completion.
Commenting on the upcoming event, Fr. Kyran Murphy, Director of St. Patrick’s Missionary Society, said “We are tremendously grateful to Sport for Africa for all they have done to provide education to the poorest areas of Africa over the past 10 years. To see the results of their efforts come to fruition in these communities is truly remarkable. The concerts planned for Whites of Wexford are very impressive and such high profile events will go a long way towards raising the necessary funds to build a secondary school in Zambia. The price of the ticket, €15, will purchase building supplies in Zambia to the equivalent value of €750, so that is the impact that the sale of one ticket will have.”
Sport for Africa would like to acknowledge all performers who have waived their fee for this worthy cause. Concert proceeds will go to Sport for Africa. Tickets are priced at €15 per person and are available from Whites Hotel or by calling 086-2537539.
