A Vision for the Future EU: Major Highlights from Brussels

This past week marked a significant milestone for the County Wexford Chamber as President Lorcán Kinsella, alongside representatives from Chambers Ireland and various Chambers, embarked on a pivotal journey to Brussels. The mission? To officially launch the Chambers Ireland Manifesto for Europe. This document serves as a forward-thinking blueprint, laying out a roadmap for the future, especially with the upcoming EU elections on the horizon. Let’s delve into the noteworthy engagements and discussions that defined this trip.

 

Day 1: Navigating EU Policies and Embracing Digital Innovation

The visit commenced with an enlightening session on the Digital Single Market, led by Martin Bailey, Head of Unit at DG CONNECT. Bailey provided a detailed overview of the EU’s digital landscape, offering invaluable insights into the ongoing initiatives and future prospects.

Peter Power took the stage to discuss the Communications Networks, Content, and Technology sectors under President von der Leyen’s leadership, shedding light on the Commission’s strategies to navigate these essential areas effectively.

Renewable energy policies and their significance to Ireland were thoroughly examined by Matthieu Ballu, offering the delegation an update on EU Energy Policy that underscored the importance of transitioning to renewable energy sources.

Financial Stability and the Capital Markets Union were brought into focus by Commissioner Mairead McGuinness. Her insights offered a rare glimpse into the inner workings of financial services within the EU, highlighting the critical aspects of financial stability.

Marcel Haag, from DG FISMA, enriched the delegation’s understanding of the EU’s financial policies, presenting valuable information on the Directorate-General for Financial Stability, Financial Services, and Capital Markets Union.

 

Day 2: Unveiling the Manifesto and Engaging in Meaningful Discussions

The launch of the European Manifesto was undoubtedly the centerpiece of the trip. Notable figures, including Ciarán Cuffe of the Green Party of Ireland / Comhaontas Glas and Billy Kelleher MEP of Fianna Fáil, came together to unveil this visionary document, setting the groundwork for impactful and future-oriented policies.

Further engagements took place at Eurochambres with CEO Ben Butters and his team, where discussions revolved around sustainability, skills, and productivity. These conversations are vital for shaping a resilient economy that can withstand the challenges of tomorrow.
